Arumugam Neysadurai was my mentor in the environmental engineering firm that I last worked for. When I discussed with him my initial thoughts on the subject, he welcomed the idea and urged me to develop it into a detailed study. I was hoping to derive the benefit of his vast experience and insight but he got too busy with a prestigious project in Singapore to spare any time for other things. Unfortunately, he passed away just before the project's completion. The firm honored him by naming after him its 'Centre for Integrated Urban Solutions.' This study is dedicated to his memory.

Uma Murugan, my older daughter is an urban and community development specialist in the USA. She reviewed the drafts of this study and offered very helpful comments relating to urbanization. She provided insights into various urbanization theories and the concept of adaptive leadership. Without her knowledgeable critiques and helpful suggestions, this study could not have been completed. She is the virtual second author of this study. I am grateful to her for her contributions.
